Baptisms in the Bible

I'm going to discuss the two most common baptisms in the Bible, water and the Holy Spirit.

For testimonies on both, check out Water Baptism Testimony and Holy Spirit Baptism Testimony.

Water Baptism

Water Baptism is a symbolic act of faith and obedience to God's word. It is a symbolic act of the representation of when Jesus died and was resurrected. We go under the water as a symbol of that death and are lifted back up as a symbol of his resurrection.

Romas 6:3-4

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Colossians 2:12

having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Being baptized in the Holy Spirit is next level, beyond next level! Read the testimony section LINK if you would like a personal account on the subject.

Luke 3:16

John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The Bible says you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Below I have listed out some of the amazing things that are possible in our lives when we have been baptized in the Holy Spirit.

1. Power to witness about Christ. Acts 1:4-8

2. Receive a heavenly language (tongues). Acts 2:1-4

3. Speaking to God not man. 1 Corinthians 14:2

4. Edifies you. 1 Corinthians 14:4

5. Building yourself up in faith. Jude 1:20

6. Praying Gods will and helping us when we don't know what to pray. Romans 8:26-27

Act 1:4-8

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, "you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

Acts 2:1-4

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

1 Corinthians 14:2

For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God.

1 Corinthians 14:4

Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.

Jude 1:20

But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit;

Romans 8:26-27

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God.
